Sterlo: referees in safe hands

Daniel Anderson

Daniel Anderson ... rebuilding confidence in the refereeing ranks. Source:News Limited

Rugby league has had a victory before a ball has been kicked in earnest thanks to the appointment of Daniel Anderson as the referee's high performance manager.

While it is still the earliest of days, I'm confident the new interpretations that have been introduced and viewed in our trial matches will translate nicely into the season proper when it kicks off next week.

There was no doubt change was needed after the 2012 season finished with a crisis of confidence across the board.

Our whistleblowers were loathe to make decisions, keener to go "upstairs" and put the responsibility on the man sitting in the video ref hot seat. This resulted in video ref technology being relied upon as a crutch more than a safety net and led to it being called into use way too often.

A combination of this and some hard to fathom rule interpretations led both players and fans into a state of confusion.

The most obvious improvement over the last two weeks has been referees backing their judgment and making calls immediately which has helped them establish control as well as aid the flow of the game.

There have also been alterations to the way some of the most important aspects of the game are to be adjudicated.

The scoring of tries tops the list with the dropping of "benefit of the doubt" a no-brainer. Now if it looks like a try has been scored, more often than not that will be the case.

However some of the more unacceptable interpretations have thankfully been removed.

No longer can a player drop the ball and negate the obvious knock-on by getting his hand back on it as it simultaneously touches the ground.

For over a 100 years that had always been a lost ball and should never have been anything but. Areas such as downward pressure and "separation" have also been intelligently dealt with.

The controversial obstruction rule was an obvious area of concern and while Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens has already been quoted as saying there will continue to be problems in its adjudication, I believe the basis of how it will be dealt with will stand up.

Basically you can't run behind your own man when in possession, the responsibility is on the decoy runner not to make contact and if the defensive line is unduly disadvantaged in the way the play unfolds it will receive a penalty.

What I particularly like is that the inequality between attack and defence that has widened over recent seasons has a chance of becoming more equitable.

The game was becoming way too biased towards favouring the side in possession, with benefit of the doubt when scoring a try a further extension of that.

The problem for the defensive team is that the little competitions that used to exist within a game are constantly being eliminated. Scrums were once a contest where you could challenge for the ball. So too the play-the-ball where the marker could rake for possession.

Players like Mario Fenech and Ben Elias became past masters at stealing the ball for their team.

Stripping the ball in the tackle was also acceptable before we overreacted to the genius of Allan Langer at being a thief in the night and made the ball carrier a protected species.

I'm not naive enough to think that the coming season will be devoid of problems and that there will not continue to be a degree of controversy and criticism when it comes to the refereeing ranks.

It is somewhat the nature of the beast with rugby league being a game of greys more than black and white.

However the introduction of the affable Anderson is a positive step towards referees establishing credibility on the back of his understanding of the essence of the game.

Anderson has always been a student of rugby league and the fact he is a highly successful former coach shouldn't hurt.

After all for the majority of the past 10 years he has been trying to bend and work to his advantage the very rules he now governs.

Day hits back to grab third

Jason Day

Jason Day ... disappointing in the semi-final but on song again in battle for third and fourth. Source: Julie Jacobson / AFP

Matt Kuchar wins the World Golf Championships (WGC) Match Play event with a 2 and 1 win over Hunter Mahan while Aussie star Jason Day finished third.

Kuchar took down Day 4 and 3 in the morning semi-final before backing it up with an impressive win over Mahan.

It was the first WGC title for the affable 34-year-old and fifth US PGA Tour win, moving him to eighth in the world rankings.

Day managed to beat Englishman Ian Poulter in the consolation final 1-up to take third place, allowing him to move to 35th in the new global rankings.

In cold and windy conditions on the Dove Mountain course, the American pair halved the opening three holes in the championship match before Kuchar won four of the next five to race to a 4-up lead through eight holes.

Mahan started to fashion a comeback with wins on the 10th and 11th holes but stalled with a loss on 13 before getting back to just 2-down with a birdie win on 14.

When Kuchar bogeyed the 16th, Mahan was back in the contest, just one down with two to play but, after a terrible lie in the fairway bunker on the second-last hole, he hacked his approach into a waste area.

Unable to advance the ball very far, Mahan then couldn't hole out from distance, conceding the hole and the match to his countryman.

Day was 2-down to Poulter through six holes but won the seventh, eighth and ninth to gain a 1-up lead.

He won the 12th with a par to double his advantage and went 3-up when Poulter bogeyed the 14th but the 25-year-old struggled to close out the match.

Day bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes to keep the Englishman alive and needed to make a nine-foot par on the last to close the deal.

"I won three holes straight, and we were kind of laughing and giggling out there for the first nine and, once we turned the corner on 10, everything got real serious,'' Day said.

"He obviously made a couple of good clutch pars on 16 and 17.''

Day was disappointed to bow out in the semis but optimistic about the week in its entirety where he beat three major champions and an impressive rookie.

"I just wasn't quite sharp, not as sharp as yesterday this morning. I just came out this morning a little flat and made a lot of mental errors out there and just pretty much gave the game to Kuch so I am a little disappointed,'' Day said.

"But I think the whole week in itself is a positive week for me.

"I played good golf against great golfers.''

Jets shoot down Phoenix to go fifth

Jets

Successful trip ... Newcastle Jets grab a crucial three points against the Phoenix. Source: Ross Setford / AAP

Life without Ricki Herbert began on a dispiriting note for the Wellington Phoenix, whose A-League playoff hopes have virtually disappeared with a 2-1 loss to the Newcastle Jets.

The last-placed Phoenix produced a listless home display for interim coach Chris Greenacre, who had a day to prepare his team following the sudden resignation of six-year mentor Herbert.

His team failed to rise to the occasion in front of a small crowd of 4025 on Wednesday, their lack of cohesion allowing a slick Jets side to dominate and cement their place inside the top six.

The Phoenix remain rooted on 21 points, still six points outside the top six and with little hope of infiltrating the playoffs with just four games remaining.

The visitors broke a long drought in Wellington to climb to fifth on 30 points, although they've played one more game than fringe rivals Melbourne Heart and Sydney FC on 27.

Re-live all the video highlights and key statistics from the Jets' win over Wellington at our A-League Match Centre.

The sudden departure of striker Ryan Griffiths to Chinese Super League club Beijing Baxi FC rocked the Jets this week but their front division showed few ill-effects.

They found space easily, particularly in the first half when strikers Adam Taggart and Michael Bridges put them 2-0 ahead.

Taggart, 19, was unmarked 8m out from goal in the 19th minute to side-foot home a Joshua Brillante cross while more poor defending allowed the excellent Bridges to score with a low header off a free kick a minute before halftime.

The second half was a more even affair and former Jet Jeremy Brockie pulled a goal back in the 60th minute after

Louis Fenton struck a point-blank shot straight at the face of goalkeeper Mark Birighitti.

Brockie rocketed the rebound in for his 13th goal of the season.

The Jets still created the clearer chances from them, the best falling to Craig Goodwin, who cracked a shot straight at goalkeeper Glen Moss, playing his 100th A-League match.

Fenton was at the heart of the Phoenix's best moments but the visitors defended efficiently, led by Regan Taylor.

The result tipped history on its head for Newcastle, who hadn't won in Wellington since their first visit here in 2007, which was followed by eight Phoenix wins and a draw. The Jets also hadn't won any away match since round six this season.

Their concern ahead of Sunday's visit to the Melbourne Victory will be injuries which forced Zenon Caravella and Sam Gallaway from the field.

The Phoenix face an "away" game against the Melbourne Heart in Dunedin on Sunday, seeking to add to their one win in 10 matches in 2013.

Goddard lets go to take control again

Brendon Goddard

Frustrated footballer ... Brendon Goddard needed a change. Source: Michael Klein / News Limited

There were times over the past two years that Brendon Goddard looked a frustrated footballer. There's a good reason for that. He was.

The former St Kilda utility elevated his standing in the game on the back of a brilliant finals series in 2010, principally his performance in the drawn grand final against Collingwood.

He began the 2011 campaign as the player most likely to take the game by the throat as he entered the prime of his career. He was a taller-than-average midfielder with the ability to swing back and forward as needed.

Do you think Goddard will hit top form in 2013? Pick him now then and join FOX FOOTY SuperCoach, Australia's biggest fantasy sports game, for a shot at $50,000.

But the pressure of it all - including that caused by his own lofty expectations - made for a difficult couple of his seasons at the Saints.

"It just becomes draining, especially when you're not performing the way you want to," Goddard, who switched to Essendon in last year's trade period, said.

"I have been speaking to a few people and it was actually a golfer (who told me) about giving up control to gain control.

"I've used that along the way. In simple terms it's about playing on instincts rather than trying to force things."

Goddard has settled into life at the Bombers well. He's in the leadership group, is enjoying training, and can't wait for round one. He’s refreshed and ready.

Essendon take on Richmond in Wangaratta on Saturday night. You can see the game live on FOX FOOTY.

Ange: Victory will find finals form

Postecoglou

Melbourne Victory coach Ange Postecoglou is confident his listless side can find the form and winning momentum they need to challenge in the looming A-League finals.

Socceroo Archie Thompson trained strongly on Friday and is set to return as the Victory look to end a run of three losses when they host Newcastle on Sunday afternoon at AAMI Park.

The Jets have given them a helping hand by resting marquee player Emile Heskey and striker Michael Bridges, while Thompson looks to have recovered from a hamstring injury.

"It's great to have him back in the side,'' Postecoglou said.

"He's an important part of what we do.''

Will Melbourne Victory be a threat in the A-League finals? Have your say!

Postecoglou hasn't pushed the panic button following his fourth-placed team's 6-2 shocker against ladder leaders Central Coast.

He said it was more important for them to peak for the finals with four rounds remaining after this weekend.

"Whatever happened last week or the week before, it's really important in the next five weeks that we hit our best form of the year,'' said Postecoglou.

"If we do that on the eve of the finals, it gives us the best chance to win the competition.

"There's no point in peaking today and not being right when the finals come around.''

The coach said losing to the A-League's top three teams in their past three games was an "indicator'' of where they were at.

The Victory at least have an easy run home, meeting five of the bottom six clubs.

Postecoglou wasn't surprised the Jets opted to rest Heskey, given his 35 years and heavy travel schedule with four games in 14 days, and said he would have done the same.

The Jets are among five teams vying for the final two finals spots.

Check out the A-League squads for round 23!

"If anything, they're going to have a fresh side out there full of running which will be a challenge for us.''

Midfielder Zenon Caravella will also miss the trip to Melbourne with a hamstring injury he sustained against the Phoenix, while Sam Gallaway is in major doubt after hyper-extending his knee.

"We can't afford to be really poor again,'' said Postecoglou.

"The most important thing for us is to get back to playing good football.''
