Europa: Bale injured, Chelsea cruise

Gareth Bale suffered a nasty injury in Tottenham Hotspur's Europa League quarter-final draw with Basel while Chelsea did it easy against Rubin Kazan and Newcastle were humbled by Benfica.

Spurs fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to Basel in the first leg of their Europa League quarter final in London, but more of a concern is Bale's injury.

The Welsh wizard awkwardly rolled his ankle late in game and had to be stretchered off the field.

Valentin Stocker and Fabian Frei stunned White Hart Lane before the break but Emmanuel Adebayor and Gylfi Sigurdsson gave Spurs hope of progressing in the second leg in Switzerland.

Both sides had chances to take a win, but the scoreline stayed at 2-2 and Bale' injury added to the feeling that Andre Villas-Boas' side have it all to do when they travel to Switzerland for the away leg next Thursday.

Chelsea will go into their quarter-final second leg against Rubin Kazan next week with a healthy 3-1 advantage thanks in large to a brace from Fernando Torres.

The beleaguered Spanish forward bundled home the opening goal of the night early on before Victor Moses lashed in a stunning second. However, the visitors pulled one back when John Terry was penalised by referee Gianluca Rocchi for handball.

Bebars Natcho made no mistake from the spot, sending Petr Cech the wrong way four minutes from the break.

Torres though bagged his second of the night with 20 minutes remaining as he climbed high to head the ball past Sergey Ryzhikov after a fine delivery from Juan Mata.

Newcastle face an uphill battle to reach the semi-finals of the Europa League after going down 3-1 to Benfica in the first-leg of their quarter final at the Estadio da Luz.

Benfica punished two second half mistakes from Davide Santon and Steven Taylor to score through Lima and Oscar Cardozo (penalty) after Papiss Cisse saw his early effort cancelled out in the first half by Rodrigo.

Real cruise past Gala in Madrid

Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid have one foot in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after a 3-0 win over Galatasaray in the first leg of their quarter-final clash.

Real rarely looked in any real danger and were two goals up before the half-hour mark through Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

A second-half header from Gonzalo Higuain sealed the more than comfortable win for Real, who have left Galatasaray with it all to do ahead of next week's second leg in Istanbul.

Mourinho has never lost a European quarter-final in his managerial history, and that record never looked in danger at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The visitors started off reasonably well, and they played an attacking formation with Wesley Sneijder, Hamit Altintop and Selcuk Inan all pushing forward to try and join Didier Drogba and Burak Yilmaz.

But, just nine minutes in and the deadlock was broken. A flowing move saw Mesut Ozil feed Ronaldo and he dinked the ball over Fernando Muslera in typically clinical fashion.

Despite going behind, the Turkish giants continued to push forward. Drogba had a decent effort pushed wide by Diego Lopez before Emmanuel Eboue then wasted a great chance after being played through by his fellow countryman - but he fired straight at the Real keeper.

Just moments later and Gala were punished for some slack defending, Michael Essien - playing at right-back - put a good ball into the box. Semih Kaya and Eboue failed to deal with it and, before they could react, Benzema had controlled and swept the ball into the net.

With Sneijder withdrawn at half-time, the Turkish side were a more solid outfit - but what they gained in defence, they lost in attack as they posed little threat in the second half.

Indeed, it was little surprise that Real extended their advantage. Xabi Alonso curled a teasing free-kick into the box and Higuain headed into the corner to score and surely end any hopes Galatasaray had of a second-leg comeback.

The visitors did have late calls for a penalty denied when Sergio Ramos stood on Yilmaz's foot - but the striker was harshly booked for a dive instead. Ramos later picked up a booking that ruled him out of the second-leg when he kicked the ball away with just minutes left.

Another real positive for Mourinho will be the fact that this was Real's first clean sheet in the Champions League this season.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund wasted a string of gilt-edged chances after being held to a 0-0 draw by Malaga in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final in Spain.

Mario Gotze was the guiltiest party for Dortmund as he missed three golden opportunities and Robert Lewandowski fluffed the best opening as Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini saw his team achieve his pre-match objective of not conceding an away goal.
