Bombers announce report findings

David Evans

An internal review into irregular practices at Essendon has not recommended the sacking of any key officials at the AFL club.

The report, chaired by former Telstra chief executive Ziggy Switkowski, centred on governance issues at Essendon relating to last year's controversial supplements program.

Switkowski recommended that any pioneering work with supplements and exotic treatments should be left to the Australian Sports Commission.

"At a club level, this is not an area for risk management but for zero tolerance," said the report.

"A club's pharmacology skills should not normally be independently and secretly developed as a source of competitive advantage.

"And an arms race for the most sophisticated molecules must be prohibited."

The report also found that Essendon's club doctor should be the signing authority for all medicines, supplements, diagnostic tests and therapeutic treatments.

Essendon chairman David Evans did not release the full version of the Switkowski report on Monday, although it will be made available to the AFL, the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority and the Essendon board.

A parallel review, led by ASADA and the AFL into the nature of supplements administered by Essendon and their level of compliance with anti-doping codes, is ongoing.

"This was a no-go area for this report," read the Switkowski report.

"Questions about the pharmacology of certain supplements, their possible performance-affecting properties, compliance or otherwise with anti-doping codes etc are issues for the AFL and ASADA investigations, which still have some way to go.

"This review and report needed to be conducted in a manner careful not to inadvertently compromise their work."
Essendon players are set to be interviewed by ASADA this week.

The release of the report was delayed for a week because of a legal problem with suspended club fitness boss Dean Robinson which has since been resolved.

Essendon CEO Ian Robson and general manager of football operations Danny Corcoran have both been criticised in the wake of the supplements scandal but the report made no recommendations that any staff members be sacked.

The Switkowski report noted that the CEO "must be accountable for everything that happens within his organisation".

"Coaches cannot bypass him, and boards must work through him," the report said.

"If commercial priorities consume his time and attention, steps must be taken to ensure proper oversight of football operations."

It described the football operations role as a particularly difficult one.

"But this is a critical appointment requiring a strong capable individual who has the respect of the football staff and the support of the CEO," said the report.

Evans said he would stay on as Essendon chairman but had brought forward board elections to later this year.

Dons find banned drug invoice: report

Dank

The Essendon Football Club has reportedly found an invoice for a banned performance-enhancing supplement in its records.

Fairfax Media says the invoice was for the drug Hexarelin, which was banned by WADA in 2004, and was sent to the club by a business associate of Stephen Dank, the sports scientist who ran the club's supplement program.

The invoice is not proof that anyone at the club took the drug.

In a statement to Fairfax Media, an Essendon spokesman said: "The club will not make any comment due to the ongoing investigation of ASADA and the AFL, as well as the club's internal governance review''.

Fairfax Media also says Mr Dank's lawyers have signalled they are preparing to sue AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou for defamation, and are examining whether they can sue the Bombers over the way Dank was sacked.

In relation to the Melbourne Demons, Fairfax says confidential documents show the club told AFL officials in February that the club's doctor, Dan Bates, had "communications'' with Dank, and players had been given vitamin injections at an external clinic.

However, Dr Bates failed to disclose to an internal club review in March that he had asked co-captain Jack Trengove to use a cream containing an anti-obesity drug banned by doping authorities this week.

Fairfax Media also says an elite Australian athlete managed by one of Essendon's top officials received vitamin injections at the same clinic.

Antonis in talks with Parma: report

Terry Antonis

In demand ... Terry Antonis could be heading to Italy. Source: Mark Evans / News Limited

Sydney FC young gun Terry Antonis is reportedly on the cusp of a move to the top league in Italy.

The World Game is reporting that the 19-year-old rising star is due to fly to Italy to discuss personal terms with Serie A club Parma, who have tabled an effort large enough to trigger an automatic release from Antonis's current contract.

The news emerged just weeks after it was revealed Antonis had earned a trial with Dutch club Utrecht, who already have Aussie stars Tommy Oar, Michael Zullo and Adam Sarota on their books.

But it now looks like Italy might be Antonis's destination, and he could join the club as soon as July, when the European summer transfer window opens.

Parma are currently sitting in 10th position in the Serie A, and would be hoping to challenge for a spot in Europe next season.

Antonis burst onto the scene as a raw 16-year-old with the Sky Blues, but a combination of injuries and international commitments with Australia's youth teams have seen him start just 27 A-League games so far.

Australia's overseas Socceroos contingent wrapped up their preparations ahead of a long flight home last weekend.

•Mark Schwarzer: returns home after thwarting Tottenham Hotspurs in goals for Fulham in a 1-0 win. Two late saves – both against Jermaine Defoe – helped his side to an upset win at White Hart Lane.

•Brett Holman: lack of game time for Aston Villa remains a concern; he was an unused sub in their 3-2 win over Queens Park Ranger in their relegation showdown. Chris Herd is still out with injury.

•Rhys Williams: unused substitute as Middlesbrough in a 1-0 loss to Birmingham City. Scott McDonald started and had a goal disallowed.

•Mile Jedinak: 90 minutes as Crystal Palace slumped 3-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion, a dent to their automatic promotion dreams.

•Tom Rogic: on the team sheet but wasn’t used in late 4-3 win over Aberdeen.

•Robbie Kruse: another notable display, this time via an assist for Fortuna Dusseldorf in their 1-1 draw against Wolfsburg. His crucial centre across the by-line provides further relegation relief for his side, now five points clear.

•Tommy Oar: the talented left-midfielder is in doubt for the World Cup qualifier after copping a knock to his knee. He was substituted as FC Utrecht went down 2-1 to Feyenoord.

•Michael Zullo: absent with injury.

•James Holland: another 90 minutes for Austria Wien, as they beat Mattersburg 4-0. Holland looks a good shot at winning silverware in Austria – 13 points ahead at the top of the league.

•Luke Wilkshire: didn’t make Dinamo Moscow’s squad in 1-1 draw against Kuban Krasnodar.

•Robert Cornthwaite: not selected as Chunnam Dragons lost 1-0 to Ulsan Hyundai.

•Ryan McGowan: a full game in Chinese league for Shandong Luneng in 2-0 win over Changchun Yatai.

•Matt McKay: played 90 minutes for Changchun in the clash against McGowan’s side.

•Alex Brosque: absent as Al Ain beat Al Shaab 3-1 in the UAE Emirates Cup.

•Tim Cahill: 90 minutes for New York Red Bulls, playing as a midfielder in a 0-0 draw with DC United.

Dino Djulbic will miss Al Whada's Etisalat Cup semi-final against Al Jazira to play for the Socceroos; Mark Bresciano's Al-Gharafa didn't play.

SBW doubtful for opener: report

SBW

SBW ... likely to miss the NRL season opener through injury. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

Sonny Bill Williams is rated unlikely to feature in Thursday night's NRL season opener for Sydney Roosters against South Sydney, Fox Sports expert Matt Johns says.

Williams injured his pectoral playing rugby union in Japan last year after which the star underwent surgery to repair the muscle tear.

Williams has not featured in any of the Roosters' trials while the 27-year-old was also bashed around in the final few rounds of his WBA heavyweight bout in Brisbane just three weeks ago.

Johns says the Roosters will likely rest their prized recruit from what was expected to be his first game back in the NRL since leaving in 2008 to play rugby union.

"All I'm hearing is that torn pec muscle is not 100% repaired and they're thinking of resting him,"  Johns said on Triple M Sydney's Grill Team.

The Roosters will name their side to host the Rabbitohs at Allianz Stadium later on Tuesday afternoon.
