FOX FOOTY Supercoach preview: Suns

Gold Coast Suns

Which Gold Coast Suns players should you pick in your FOX FOOTY SuperCoach team this year and who should you avoid?

Many see it as a simple answer – pick Gary Ablett and then move on.

Yes, the little master is a FOX FOOTY SuperCoach must but there are certainly other Suns players you need in your side.

We are here at your service to help you on your way to FOX FOOTY SuperCoach glory.

SUPERCOACH STAR
Gary Ablett $740,500 (mid)

The franchise, the superstar, the Brownlow medallist.
Call him what you want, but there is no doubting Ablett is the SuperCoach star. Not just of the Suns, but of the entire AFL. Any questions whether Ablett would be the same player on the Gold Coast have dried up. If anything, he has taken his game to a new level. The skipper has been SuperCoach gold for a long time and we don’t see that changing this year. Worth the very hefty price tag.

BANK EM
Harley Bennell $521,900 (mid/fwd)

Bennell is not an A-grader yet, but many feel he is on the cusp of stardom. It is our opinion he will reach the A-grade by the end of 2013. Entering his third AFL season, the former No.2 draft pick appears ready to go to the next level. Silky smooth midfielder who can also go forward and kick goals. Ignore at your own peril.

Jaeger O’Meara $115,900 (mid)
At just $115,900, this kid is the undisputed SuperCoach bargain of the century. We are fairly sure O’Meara has his own separate publicity machine behind him at the Suns. To say they are happy and excited about him is an understatement. But it is with good reason – the kid is something special. Taken by the Suns in the mini-draft a year ago, he has already spent a year at the club getting ready for his senior debut. Was allowed to play NAB Cup last year and looked ready for AFL then, so imagine him now 12 months now. Has put on a lot of size and will play a lot of senior football this year. Jump on or you will be sorry.

BUY EM
Danny Stanley $483,200 (def)

The man known at the Suns as “Bull” is a ridiculously underrated AFL player. He averaged 24 disposals and eight marks a game last year. Stanley also knows how to float forward and kick a good goal or two when required. Finished a fitting third in the Suns’ club championship last year, and may have gone higher had he not missed the first seven games of the season. One player you should really consider.

Jarrod Harbrow $414,500 (def)
The former Bulldog never receives much fanfare, but what he does do is accumulate the football. The running defender generates much of the Suns’ run off the half-back line. Will be a handy pick up and comes much cheaper than some other half-back runners across the league.

DUMP EM
Trent McKenzie $360,000 (def)
We don’t expect the Cannon to do much firing in 2013. McKenzie has come from a long way back this pre-season and there have been questions about where his fitness is at. He may come good as the season goes on, but for now we suggest you steer clear. Plenty of upside, but not a massive winner of the ball.

Karmichael Hunt $310,900 (mid)
We love Karmichael, but he is not a high possession player. Well, at least not yet. The former rugby league player continues to improve and is enjoying life in the midfield. But expect him this year to be used as a blocker for the likes of Ablett. He is in there to use his strength and make life easier for his fellow midfielders. And in doing that, he does a good job. That is good news for Suns coach Guy McKenna, but not for your FOX FOOTY SuperCoach team.

FOX FOOTY SUPERCOACH DRAFT WATCH

David Swallow $418,200 (mid)
The former No.1 draft pick could be a bargain for your side. Has enjoyed his first full pre-season with the Suns and he is finally injury free. Entering his third AFL season, we have seen the best of Swallow only in bits and pieces. But if his injury worries really are behind him and he can get some momentum and confidence behind him, look out. It could be the last year you will see the younger brother of North Melbourne skipper Andrew at this price.

Jesse Lonergan $139,500 (mid)
The Suns are very excited about Lonergan. The Tasmanian product, who is a first-year player at the Suns, is solidly built and has performed very well over the season. Those in the know at the Suns suggest he will play a lot of senior football this year.
