North Melbourne recruit Ben Jacobs was also impressive in his first game since crossing from Port Adelaide, kicking a super goal in the first half.
Melbourne made a late run on the back of Jeremy Howe's back-to-back goals and showcased their future talent with Chris Dawes, Shannon Byrnes, Jack Trengove and Jesse Hogan all making positive contributions.
The game was the first of a triple-header with Richmond.
