The Pies trailed by 10 points at three-quarter time, but goals to Steele Sidebottom and Scott Pendlebury inside the final minute of play sealed a memorable win for Nathan Buckley’s men in their first encounter with the Mick Malthouse-led Blues.
Youngster Jamie Elliot was outstanding for the Magpies with five goals, while Chris Yarran, Jeff Garlett and Andrew Walker kicked three apiece for Carlton.
Heath Shaw and Dane Swan gathered 26 possessions each while Marc Murphy led from the front with 26 touches for the Blues.
