Rocket calls for slide rule change

Rodney Eade has weighed in on the AFL's new slide rule, suggesting the interpretation should be examined and possibly refined by the league.

Speaking on AFL Insider, the Collingwood coaching strategist highlighted numerous incidents from round three including the wet and wild clash between Fremantle and Essendon on Friday night, as well as the high-profile case involving Harry O’Brien on Sunday in which the AFL subsequently admitted the wrong call was made.

"If a player slides in like Hodgey slid, then it should have been a free kick against him, because it was dangerous," Eade said.

"But if a player is on the ground clambering for the ball and he hits a leg and it's incidental contact, that shouldn't be a free kick.

“There has to be a sliding rule, not an ‘on the ground’ rule. Players are going to be on the ground. That's just the way it is. you're going to be tackled … you're going to be bumped over."

Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall echoed Eade’s sentiments.

"You can't expect everyone to stand up and bend down straight legged to pick up the ball. Players will go to ground to get it, because that’s where it is.

"The rule was brought in to stop players sliding in and I think we've gone too far with it."

Eade also suggested players are beginning to exploit the rule by forcing contact with a player while he was on the ground to earn a free kick.

What do you think about the slide rule so far? Do you think it needs a few tweaks, or should it be scrapped completely?
