Sydney FC's board has approved final modifications to Alessandro Del Piero's contract and a formal announcement that the Italian will play a second year in Sydney is imminent.

It’s believed that the deal was given final approval on Tuesday and hands Sydney the perfect boost ahead of Sunday’s trip to Melbourne Heart.

The substantive terms of the deal including salary and incentives remain the same - as were signed in Turin in September last year - however, a more formalised structure has been negotiated around the marketing of Del Piero and the club, with the benefit of the first season’s experience after the original deal was put together at very short notice.

Del Pierro’s salary remains $3.6 million gross and the club is likely to renew the Del Piero range of merchandise that it rushed out earlier this season.

Del Piero’s signature is another huge brick in the reconstruction of Sydney under Frank Farina to go with the short-term signing of Lucas Neill and longer term securing of Joel Griffiths.

The Italian has been a stunning success on and off the field, scoring 11 goals to be Sydney’s highest-ever goal scorer in one season and attracting bumper crowds wherever Sydney plays.
