Frustrated footballer ... Brendon Goddard needed a change. Source: Michael Klein / News Limited
There were times over the past two years that Brendon Goddard looked a frustrated footballer. There's a good reason for that. He was.
The former St Kilda utility elevated his standing in the game on the back of a brilliant finals series in 2010, principally his performance in the drawn grand final against Collingwood.
He began the 2011 campaign as the player most likely to take the game by the throat as he entered the prime of his career. He was a taller-than-average midfielder with the ability to swing back and forward as needed.
Do you think Goddard will hit top form in 2013? Pick him now then and join FOX FOOTY SuperCoach, Australia's biggest fantasy sports game, for a shot at $50,000.
But the pressure of it all - including that caused by his own lofty expectations - made for a difficult couple of his seasons at the Saints.
"It just becomes draining, especially when you're not performing the way you want to," Goddard, who switched to Essendon in last year's trade period, said.
"I have been speaking to a few people and it was actually a golfer (who told me) about giving up control to gain control.
"I've used that along the way. In simple terms it's about playing on instincts rather than trying to force things."
Goddard has settled into life at the Bombers well. He's in the leadership group, is enjoying training, and can't wait for round one. He’s refreshed and ready.
Essendon take on Richmond in Wangaratta on Saturday night. You can see the game live on FOX FOOTY.
