Melbourne Heart football club claims it knows the identity of the man filmed violently assaulting a Western Sydney Wanderers supporter at an A-league match in Melbourne.
The offender was removed from the stadium after the incident but his details were not taken by security staff. It is understood the victim has not yet sought to press charges.
Heart chief executive Scott Munn said the club believed it knew the identity of the offender. "We are reasonably comfortable we know who the person is and all action will be taken to provide his identity to the police," Mr Munn said.
He said the person was not a Heart's member. "His actions were not appropriate and we don't accept it -- it was absolutely abhorrent," Mr Munn said.
Football Federation Australia head Damien de Bohun said the FFA had been assisting Melbourne Heart to identify the perpetrator. "Based on our repeated public statements about anti-social behaviour and the lengthy bans that have been imposed, no one should be in any doubt about how serious FFA and the clubs are taking this incident," he said.
Victorian police said they had not yet laid any charges and nor had the assaulted man come forward with a complaint.
