Brisbane Broncos centre Justin Hodges has been ruled out of Saturday's NRL clash with Sydney Roosters after failing to overcome a hamstring twinge.
Hodges had been given until Friday to get his right leg fit, but did not train with the team at the final training session on Friday morning.
Second-rower Matt Gillett trained in the centres with David Stagg appearing to be promoted to the back row.
The duo will rotate between centre and second row as the Broncos develop a makeshift right side combination.
The loss of Hodges will be a huge blow to the Broncos, as he has been the club's most productive attacking player in his two games this year.
The 30-year-old felt a twinge in his right hamstring shortly after returning from the sin bin in last Friday's morale boosting win over the Dragons.
With an eight-day turnaround to the Roosters clash there had been hope Hodges may recover in time to play, but the club refused to risk a strike player three weeks into the year.
"He is just not right. He is very close but it's early in the season and we will rehab him up and hopefully (he'll be able to play) next week," coach Anthony Griffin said.
