Sonny Bill Williams is rated unlikely to feature in Thursday night's NRL season opener for Sydney Roosters against South Sydney, Fox Sports expert Matt Johns says.

Williams injured his pectoral playing rugby union in Japan last year after which the star underwent surgery to repair the muscle tear.

Williams has not featured in any of the Roosters' trials while the 27-year-old was also bashed around in the final few rounds of his WBA heavyweight bout in Brisbane just three weeks ago.

Johns says the Roosters will likely rest their prized recruit from what was expected to be his first game back in the NRL since leaving in 2008 to play rugby union.

"All I'm hearing is that torn pec muscle is not 100% repaired and they're thinking of resting him,"  Johns said on Triple M Sydney's Grill Team.

The Roosters will name their side to host the Rabbitohs at Allianz Stadium later on Tuesday afternoon.
