Oh so close ... Ogilvy returns to fowm at the Honda Classic. Source:AFP
That's what you've got to love about this great game of golf - anybody can win at any given time. If it's your week, it's your week.
All you have to do is persevere, work hard and have the dedication and belief that one day your time will come.
Well, for American Michael Thompson his time arrived on Sunday at the Honda Classic. The 27-year-old hung tough over the closing holes, holding off a host of Major winners including Geoff Ogilvy, Graeme McDowell, Lucas Glover and the in-form Charl Schwartzel.
You could feel Thompson's relief when he holed his final putt for a two-shot victory. The win ended a mini form slump which saw him miss his previous three cuts and the only cheque he had made this season was for $10,919 for finishing 78th at the Farmers Insurance Open.
He’s a good player and I’m sure we will hear more from him now he has his maiden Tour win.
It was great to see Ogilvy up near the top and contending again. It's been a torrid time for the former Major winner, with the past 15 months only producing one top 10 on the PGA Tour - and that came at last year’s Open Championship where he tied for 9th.
With his runner-up finish at the Honda both he and Thompson receive the final two spots into this week’s WGC event in Miami.
Rory McIlroy's troubles continued at the Honda, walking off the course having only played eight holes in his second round.
In the five rounds he has played so far in 2013 he is 13-over-par and hasn't even looked like shooting in the 60s. He needs to find something - and quick - with some of the biggest tournaments coming up over the next two months. Still, there is one thing that hasn't disappeared and that's his raw talent. He'll find it.
It's a split week on the PGA Tour as the best players in the world head to the Blue Monster at Doral for the WGC Cadillac Championship, while for the rest it's a trip to the Trump International Golf Club for the Peurto Rico Open.
Firstly, Justin Rose will defend the WGC event after the Englishman overran Bubba Watson on the final day to win last year.
Tiger Woods is teeing it up in his second straight event and coming off poor performances the past two weeks will be out to rectify the situation.
The former world No.1 has a great track record at Doral having won three in a row up until 2007, but hasn't really featured the past five Championships. Phil Mickelson, the 2009 champion, returns from two weeks off that included skipping the WGC-Accenture Match Play for his kids’ spring break. He is another that plays really well at this event.
There are five Aussies that are teeing it up this week: Adam Scott, Jason Day, John Senden, Ogilvy and Marcus Fraser. Of the five, Ogilvy has the best record around the Blue Monster, winning in 2008 and finishing runner-up the previous year.
Scott always seems to play well at Doral as well, while Jason Day has had a great start to his 2013 campaign, posting three top 10s and I think he is a real chance this week.
There are eight of our boys teeing it up in the Puerto Rico Open, with Matt Jones scoring a top 10 in last year’s event. He played nicely at the Honda, finishing a respectable equal 18th.
I've got three players to look out for.
The first is Luke Guthrie, who is coming off a third place finish at the Honda while another rookie this year, Patrick Cantlay, won the Web.com tour event in Columbia on the weekend and has got to be a show as well.
I’ve got a nice roughie for you as well. Canadian Graeme Delaet posted a top 10 in Puerto Rico last year and is coming off a tie for 9th at the Honda on the weekend.
Watch The Golf Show, hosted by Brett Ogle, on Tuesdays at 7.30pm (EDT) on Fox Sports 2HD.
