Former St George Illawarra Dragons superstar Mark Gasnier looks back on the ninth round of NRL action in 2013 and singles out his player of the week to be awarded The Gaz Man.

And the award, for his superstar performance in Canberra Raider's big win over Newcastle, goes to...

BLAKE FERGUSON

Ferguson only enhanced his strong Origin claims with a hat-trick in the Raiders'  44-14 win over the Knights in the nation's capital.

I think he displayed variety to his game that’s developed. He's always had the individual brilliance but is now showing a great right foot step, the quick catch-and-pass and he punches the hole short and chases kicks.

You need variety to your game if you want longevity in rugby league. With all the video technology, teams quickly figure out their opponents, so you need to be always changing and developing otherwise you become easy to stop.

Blake Ferguson showed that variety against the Knights.

One area that he still probably needs to improve on, and it’s probably the most difficult, is his defence.

You need a great rapport with your backrower, winger and five-eighth or whoever is defending inside and outside you.

Ferguson got caught narrow to his inside defender for the first try of the game to Darius Boyd. If he changes his positioning  a bit it will make life easier for him in defence.

Overall Blake Ferguson would be the player who is most filling his potential over the past couple of years. He’s obviously trained hard and his strength has come on leaps and bounds.

I would have him in for Origin. They’re looking at Josh Morris at right centre, but he’s a left centre. You need that strike both sides of the field. Fergo could even play right wing for the Blues and keep swapping positions with Morris.
