Cronulla captain Paul Gallen has been cleared of serious knee damage and should be fit to play in next month's State of Origin opener, although he is almost certain to miss this weekend's clash with Wests Tigers.

Gallen left the field after injuring his knee in the first half of the Sharks' golden point win over Newcastle on Sunday and was put in a leg brace.

The worrying grimace on Gallen's face as he left the field led to suggestions that the NSW skipper might be in danger of missing the crucial opening match of the Origin series but those fears were put to rest by a scan on Monday morning.

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan told reporters after Sunday's game that he expected Gallen to miss at least a week but said he expected the courageous leader to do whatever he could to ensure he took the field against the Tigers.
