Cronulla captain Paul Gallen has been cleared of serious knee damage and could take the field this weekend against Wests Tigers.

Gallen left the field after injuring his knee in the first half of the Sharks' golden point win over Newcastle on Sunday and was put in a leg brace.

Initial reports suggested the NSW skipper had strained ligaments and was in danger of missing State of Origin I but scans on Monday morning cleared the workhorse of serious damage.

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan told reporters after Sunday's game that he expected Gallen to miss at least a week but said he expected the courageous leader to do whatever he could to ensure he took the field against the Tigers.
